Today is a public holiday across the country

The Gurung community is celebrating the ‘Tamu Lhosar’ festival today by saying goodbye to the old year and welcoming the new year.

Since ‘Lho’ means year and ‘Saar’ means change, the day on which the year changes is called ‘Tamu Lhosar’.

Tamu Lhosar is grandly celebrated by the Gurung community as a new year.

This festival is celebrated on December 15 as the heat of the sun comes first in Lamjung, Gorkha, Tanahun, Syangja, Manang, Kaski, Parbat and other districts where the Gurung community is in majority.

After this, it is believed that this festival is celebrated in Magh and Fagun as the heat of the sun comes to the areas inhabited by the Tamang and Sherpa tribes respectively.

It is said that this festival is also important because the night of Poush 15th is the longest and the nights after it decrease.

Meanwhile, the government has declared a public holiday today. On the occasion of the festival, the Ministry of Home Affairs has declared a public holiday across the country. On the other hand, on the occasion of ‘Tamu Lhosar’, the President, Vice President, Prime Minister and party leaders have expressed their best wishes on the occasion of the festival.
